महाभारत में एक प्रसंग आया है कि क्षत्रिय-धर्म का परिपालन करने के लिये माता कुन्ती भीम को एक ब्राह्मण-परिवार की रक्षा करने हेतू उद्यत करती है। वह कथा इस प्रकार है-

युधिष्टिर आदि पांचों भाइयों का अपनी माता कुन्ती के साथ तपस्वियों के रूप में एकचक्रा नगरी में एक ब्राह्मण के घर रहना 

एक समय की बात है कि युधिष्टिर आदि पांचों भाई अपनी माता कुन्ती के साथ तपस्वियों के रूप में एकचक्रा नगरी में एक ब्राह्मण के घर रह रहे थे। सभी भाई भिक्षाटन कर सायंकाल घर लौटते और मिलकर भोजन करने। इस प्रकार पर्याप्त दिवस व्यतीत हो गये।

ब्राह्मण पर किसी महान विपत्ति का आना 

एक दिन किसी कारणवश भीमसेन माता के पास घर में ही रह गया तथा शेष चारों भाई भिक्षाटन के लिये बाहर चले गये। उसी दिन ब्राह्मण के घर में करूण क्रन्दन होने लगा, जिसे सुनकर दयार्द्र हो कुन्ती ने कहा-बेटा भीम! ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि ब्राह्मण पर कोई महान विपत्ति आन पडी है। हम लोगों ने इस ब्राह्मण के घर में शरण ले रखी है और ये सब हमारा बहुत सत्कार भी करते हैं। क्षत्रिय होने के नाते भी इनका दुख निवारण करना हमारा धर्म है। यदि हम इनकी कुछ सहायता कर सकें तो इनके उपकार से उऋण हो सकते हैं।

ब्राह्मण के दुःख का क्या कारण था ?

भीम ने कहा-माता! आप जाकर उनके दुख का कारण ज्ञात कर मुझे बताओ, तो मैं उनका दुख निवारण करने का भरसक प्रयत्न करूंगा। कुन्ती शीघ्र ही ब्राह्मण के पास गई। क्या देखा कि ब्राह्मण-ब्राह्मणी तथा उनकी कन्या इस बात पर अपने-अपने मत प्रकट कर रहे हैं कि राक्षस के पास उसे ही जाना है। ब्राह्मण ने ब्राह्मणी से कहा कि तुम बच्चों की देख-रेख भलीभांति करना, मैं ही कल राक्षस के पास जाउंगा। ब्राह्मणी ने कहा कि विधवा और अनाथ जीवन से तो अच्छा यही है कि मैं ही वहां चली जाउं। 

माता-पिता की बातें सुनकर कन्या ने कहा कि दुखी होने की इसमें कोई बात नहीं। धर्म के अनुसार आपने एक न एक दिन मुझे छोड ही देना है। लोग सन्तान इसीलिये चाहते हैं कि विपत्ति के समय उनकी सहायता करे। आप लोगों के बिना मेरा यह नन्हा भाई भी नहीं बच पायेगा, इसलिये श्रेयस्कर यही है कि आप लोग मुझे ही वहां जाने दें। इतना सुनकर कुन्ती उनके निकट गई और उन्हें ढांढस बंधाते हुऐ बोली-ब्राह्मणदेव! आपके दुख का क्या कारण है? आप अवश्य बताइये यदि मुझसे बन पडा तो उसका निवारण करने के लिये भरसक प्रयत्न करूंगी।

बकासुर राक्षस कौन था ? 

ब्राह्मण ने कहा- तपस्विनी! मेरे दुख का निवारण करना मनुष्य के वश की बात नहीं। इस नगर के पास बक नाम का एक राक्षस रहता है। उस बलवान राक्षस के लिये दो भैंसे तथा एक गाडी अन्न प्रतिदिन क्रम से नगरवासी देने जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य सामान लेकर जाता है, वह उसे भी खा जाता है। यदि कोई उससे स्वयं को बचाने का प्रयत्न करे तो वह उसके सारे परिवार को खा जाता है। यहां के गृहस्थ को यह कार्य करना ही पडता है और क्रमानुसार कल मेरे परिवार की बारी है। इसलिये हम में से एक सदस्य को भोजन-सामग्री लेकर उस राक्षस के पास उपस्थित होना है।

क्षत्रिय होने के नाते इनका दुख निवारण करना हमारा धर्म 

कुन्ती ने कहा-शोक न करें। आपका तो एक ही पुत्र और एक ही पुत्री है, मेरे तो पांच पुत्र हैं, उन में से एक उसका भोजन लेकर चला जायेगा।

पाण्डव छद्म वेष में ब्राह्मण तपस्वियों के रूप उनके घर रह रहे थे, इसलिये ब्राह्मण ने ब्रह्म हत्या के दोष को देखते हुए इस बात को स्वीकार नहीं किया। तब कुन्ती ने कहा ब्राह्मणदेव! मेरे पुत्र बडे शूरवीर हैं। जो भी राक्षस के पास जायेगा, वह अवश्य ही उसे मारकर लौटेगा, ऐसा मेरा दृढ विश्वास है। आप तनिक भी इसमें सन्देह न करें। कुन्ती के अत्यधिक आग्रह करने पर वे मान गये।

संध्याकाल जब युधिष्ठिर आदि घर पहुंचे तो सब वृतान्त जानकर माता से कहा कि एक ब्राह्मण की रक्षा करने हेतू अपने बेटे को राक्षस के पास भेजने का निश्चय कर के आपने बडे साहस का कार्य किया है।

दूसरे की रक्षा के लिये यदि अपने प्राणों की आहुति भी देनी पडे तो उस समय अपने प्राणों का मोह न करना, यह मानव धर्म है।

कुन्ती ने कहा बेटा! दूसरे की रक्षा के लिये यदि अपने प्राणों की आहुति भी देनी पडे तो उस समय अपने प्राणों का मोह न करना, यह मानव धर्म है। एक क्षत्रिय की आंखों के समक्ष ही यदि एक ब्राह्मण-परिवार दुख से पीडित है तो उसका यह परम धर्म बन जाता है कि उसको दुख से विमुक्त करे।

भीम द्वारा बकासुर का वध 

दूसरे दिन भीम ने जाकर बकासुर को ललकारा तथा अल्पकाल के युद्ध में ही उसे पछाडकर धराशायी कर दिया। इस प्रकार उसने अपने क्षात्र-धर्म का पालन करते हुए ब्राह्मण परिवार की रक्षा की।

जिस प्रकार कुन्ती ने ब्राह्मण-परिवार की रक्षा अथवा स्वधर्म का पालन करने के लिये भीम को बकासुर से लडने की सम्मति दी, उसी प्रकार प्रत्येक क्षत्रिय की धर्म तथा न्याय के संग्राम में अपने कर्तव्य का पालन करने में ही शोभा है।

In the Mahabharata, there has been an incident that in order to follow the Kshatriya-Dharma, Mother Kunti encourages Bhima to protect a Brahmin-family. The story is as follows-

Once upon a time, the five brothers like Yudhishthira etc. were living as a ascetic with their mother Kunti in the house of a Brahmin in Ekachakra Nagari. All the brothers return home after alms and dine together. Thus enough days have passed.

One day Bhimsen remained at home with his mother for some reason and the remaining four brothers went out for alms. On the same day, there was a bitter grief in the Brahmin's house, on hearing this, Kunti said, "Son Bhima!" It seems that there is a great calamity on the Brahmin. We have taken refuge in this Brahmin's house and all of them also welcome us a lot. As a Kshatriya, it is our religion to stop their suffering. If we can help them a bit, then their benevolence can be borrowed.

Bhima said - Mother! If you go and tell me the reason for their grief, then I will do my best to alleviate their grief. Kunti soon went to the Brahmin. Did you see that the Brahmin-Brahmin and his daughter are expressing their views on the fact that the demon has to go to him only. The Brahmin said to the Brahmin that take care of you children, I will go to the demon tomorrow. Brahmani said that it is better than widow and fatherless life that I should go there. Hearing the parents' words, the girl said that there is nothing to be sad about. According to religion, you have to leave me one day or the other. People want children to help them in times of calamity. Without you, even this little brother of mine will not be able to survive, so it is good that you guys let me go there. Hearing this, Kunti went near him and tied him up and said - Brahmadev! What is the reason for your sadness? You must tell me that if I become one, I will do my best to prevent it.

The Brahmin said- Tapaswini! Removing my grief is not a matter of human control. A demon named Buck lives near this town. For that strong monster, two buffaloes and one car go to the townspeople every day in order. The person who takes the goods, he also eats it. If anyone tries to protect himself from it, he eats all his family. The householder here has to do this work and tomorrow it is the turn of my family in order. That is why one of us members has to be present near that monster by taking food items.

Kunti said - do not grieve. You have only one son and only one daughter, I have five sons, one of them will take away his food.

The Pandavas lived in the form of Brahmin ascetics in the disguise, so the Brahmin did not accept this in view of the blame of killing Brahman. Then Kunti said Brahmadev! My son is a great knight. Whoever goes to the demon, he will surely kill and return, I believe so firmly. Do not doubt it at all. They agreed to Kunti's insistence.

When Yudhishthira etc. reached home at dusk, knowing all the stories, he told the mother that to protect a Brahmin, by deciding to send his son to the demon, you have done a lot of courage.

Kunti said, son! If you have to sacrifice your life for the protection of the sixth, then do not be tempted to take your life at that time, it is human religion. If a Brahmin-family is suffering from misery before the eyes of a Kshatriya, then it becomes his ultimate religion to relieve him of sorrow.

On the second day, Bhima went and challenged Bakasur and beat him and beat him in a temporary war. Thus he followed his kshatra-dharma and protected the Brahmin family.

Just as Kunti gave consent to Bhima to fight with Bakasur to protect the Brahmin family or to follow self-religion, similarly every Kshatriya is adorned in performing his duty in the struggle of religion and justice.
